The Scott Tournament of Hearts gets under way on Saturday, in Lethbridge, running until February 25.

Twelve teams are competing, each of the 10 Provinces, a joint Yukon/Territories team and the defending champions from BC playing as Team Canada. Each team plays every other team in a round robin format with the top teams going into the playoffs.

The Greek has totals and handicaps while Pinny has totals, money line and handicaps (rockline?).

Generally I don't like playing handicaps but Canada/Newfoundland is an obvious mismatch and I expect Team Canada to come out strongly and so I like Canada-2.5.

The other matchup I like is Nova Scotia against the Yukon/Territories team. I expect the Territories to squeeze out one maybe two wins, that are unlikely to occur against the top 4 teams. So I figure Nova Scotia has a 7-1 (7-2) chance to win.

My picks are recorded in the Tracker Forum.

Day 1

The biggest surprise, for me anyway, of the first day has been the play of the Yukon/Territories team. After handing Nova Scotia a 6-3 loss, they went ahead 7-1 against Manitoba by the 5th end. Manitoba recovered to tie 8-8 by the 9th and sealed victory with a 4 point last end. Has the Territories had its last flash of glory or will they be spoilers again? Manitoba were also suprisingly weak in their first draw against Saskatchewan losing 9-3.

I was lucky that Canada covered the spread against Newfoundland when they scored 3 in the 9th and blanked the last end when Newfoundland had the hammer to win by 3.

In draw 2 both BC and Saskatchewan covered the -2.5 spread with BC handing Quebec a 12-5 loss in 8 ends.

So although I'm 3-1 after day 1 I'm barely ahead due to the over -200 juice on Nova Scotia for a straight win.

Both of the BC teams, Team Canada and British Columbia have two matches today and I like them to take all 4 matches.

Don't remind me of that Y/NWT collapse. Had a couple bucks on them to win straight up, had the F do you blow a 7-1 lead at the break? And then to top that they can't even cover the 3.5 spread. Unreal.

Even though BC should win both today the odds seem a little much. I like Ontario to give them a run.

gl this week.
